Geological model re-interpretation of the Papagayos Formation, Cuyo Basin, Mendoza province. Finding new exploratory projects in mature basins represents a challenge. In continental deposits like the Papagayos Formation this challenge is even bigger due the subseismic character of this reservoir. This paper introduces a new stratigraphic interpretation and an environmental characterization for the integrated section of the Papagayos and Divisadero Largo Formations at the Cuyo Basin in the Mendoza Province. From the analysis of subsurface and outcrops data, lithofacies were defined, and then grouped into facies associations in order to determine the depositional environment developed over a previous volcanic topography. The stratigraphic correlation has been done with a genetic point of view based on two variables: accommodation space (A) and sedimentary supply (S). The relationship between both, result in the interpretation of three decreasing A/S hemicycles and four increasing A/S hemicycles in the section of interest. The environmental interpretation shows a NW – SE fluvial system, limited towards the west by the Punta de las Bardas High, developing pinchouts in the lower cycles while the sandstone thickness tend to be thicker in the eastern side. The upper cycles have regional extension covering the whole depocenter. The alluvial fans facies have a variable orientation with a W-E main axis. Finally the playa lake facies, with evaporites, are located mainly in the upper cycle of the sequence
