Towards the end of 2009 there was a marked decline in national oil and gas reserves, one of YPF's responses was to launch a program to review the exploratory potential of both productive and non-productive sedimentary basins.For this purpose, the Argentine Exploratory Plan (PEA) was created. The PEA was proposed to all the provinces and its implementation was made through the signing of Collaboration Agreements. Its main objective was to generate a map of exploratory opportunities throughout the country, mainly in the so-called border basins.The costs of its development, about 40 million dollars and more than 35.000 man-hours of work, were absorbed by YPF and a commitment was made to deliver a technical report with recommendations and conclusions two years after it was initiated. Twelve provinces were adhered to it: Santa Cruz, Salta, Formosa, Tucumán, Chaco, La Rioja, San Juan, Córdoba, Santa Fe, Buenos Aires, Entre Ríos and Misiones. In any case, the analysis was carried out on all the basins, both offshore and onshore.A multidisciplinary team was in charge of carrying out the technical work, reviewing, validating and classifying by province, technical reports, files, seismic lines, etc. The purpose was delivering a geo-referenced database and knowing the type and quality of the data. To optimize time and resources, specific agreements were signed with national and foreign academic centers, this allowed to obtain the methodological and geological knowledge of each one of them.In 2011 there was a general overview of all the basins and a ranking of them was formed, which allowed focusing the analysis on those in which all the elements and geological processes of an Oil System could be recognized. The results of this final stage were presented at the end of 2012. From this "map of opportunities", Private Initiatives were presented to some of the provinces and in many of them there were calls for bids.The carried work out allowed a knowledge update of many areas that have not been explored for several decades, serving to identify areas of Frontier Exploration whit potential and others that, in the absence of some of the elements of the oil system, at the discretion of YPF, would not have potential.
