Transcripción del abstract original del autor: The dynamics of the UK natural gas market will change considerably over the next decade as demand increases and indigenous production declines. The UK will no longer be self sufficient in natural gas and demand will increasingly be met by importing gas via interconnecting pipelines from Europe and through LNG. The UK currently does not have import facilities for LNG shipments and the challenge of the project described in this paper is to convert an operational LNG peak shaving plant, at the Isle of Grain, into an import terminal ready to commence base load operation in 2005. The philosophy of the design is to re-use, where possible, existing equipment to minimise the cost of the project and the lead time, whilst ensuring that the infrastructure remains viable for the next 25 years. The success of the project is influenced by many factors including system design and life extension, operational strategy, equipment reliability and supply contracts. A key consideration is ensuring that the facility will deliver the required business performance once in operation. Particular issues covered in this paper are availability modelling, for a range of scenarios, which has allowed bottlenecks in the terminal design to be identified and eliminated; the LNG storage tank decommissioning process and modifications required to upgrade the tanks to import duty; and the quantification of risks posed by the LNG jetty and the transfer pipeline from the jetty to the Isle of Grain site.
