520 _aBolivia is a major producer of natural gas and condensate in South America. Most of its reserves come primarily from naturally fractured, low-porosity Devonian reservoirs in the complex foldand-thrust belt system structures in the South Sub-Andean Tarija Basin. Traditionally, workflows for characterizing natural fractures lack information about their spatial distribution and extension in the far reservoir horizon beyond the wellbore, leading to uncertainty when defining the best intervals for completion. Due to this fact, a prominent operator decided to adopt an innovative approach for naturally fractured reservoirs characterization, implementing a patented technology with automated extraction of pre-migrated reflection events at sub-seismic scale using data from a state-of-the-art acoustic logging tool, thus achieving a quantitative estimation of dip, azimuth, density and geometry of hundreds of natural fractures in three-dimensional space sub-parallel to the well’s trajectory and with a distance offset of tens of meters away from the wellbore. These results were consistently integrated and validated with independent measurements such as borehole images and helped define the best intervals for completing the well.
