520 _aLos Molles Formation (Pliensbaquian-Callovian) has traditionally been considered as one of the main source rocks in the Neuquen basin and also a conventional reservoir when encountered as deep water sandy turbidite facies. The aim of this work is to evaluate Los Molles as an unconventional reservoir in the south eastern area of the Neuquen basin. 400 km2 of 3D seismic were extensively interpreted, allowing to build a regional seismostratigrahic model and paleoenvironmental maps for each sedimentary cycle within the Lower Jurassic. These results were integrated with geological, geochemical and sedimentological studies from older exploration wells. This approach allowed the identification of two source intervals within the 400 m thick of Los Molles Formation. The bottom section has 40 m thick, mainly homogeneous bituminous shales with up to 3% TOC and type II kerogen, that have been assigned to the initial flooding of the basin (Pliensbachian to Early Toarcian) over an irregular paleosurface with a strong tectonic imprint. The upper section, assigned to the Upper Toarcian, is 360 m thick and consists of bituminous mudstones that alternate with silstones and fine - grained sands with 2.5 TOC average and type III kerogen. This interval has been interpreted as a distal segment within the Cuyo Group clinoforms, corresponding to slope channels and levees. The reverse behavior of the redox sensitive elements as Molybdenum, Vanadium, Chromium as wells as from those associated with clastic input (Aluminum, Potassium) in both sections are indicative of shallowing trends that was confirmed by the presence of distinctive macerals. Moreover, thermal maturity data such as vitrinite reflectance, Tmax and hydrogen index support that in this area both sections reached the appropriate conditions to bear potential as an unconventional reservoir. As a result of these multidisciplinary approach, a strong correlation between the paleoenvironmental position of the stratigraphic sections and its geochemical characteristics was recognized. These distinction between the two organic levels within Los Molles Formation has proven to bear strong impact in predicting the type of fluid and the identification and assessment of its the potential as an unconventional target.
