520 _aThe Devonian-Carboniferous limit in the Tarija Basin of Bolivia. Its interpretation from subsurface information in the Chaco Plain The Devonian-Carboniferous boundary has a large importance in the Bolivian Sub-Andean and Northwest of Argentina. This boundary not only reflects changes in the paleo-climate and sedimentary environment, but can also act as a top seal for hydrocarbon accumulations in the reservoirs of Iquiri Formation. Several factors complicate its precise identification, as its lithological variability and palynological ages, which often are not accurate enough, and the presence of strong erosional unconformities. The analysis developed presents a possible model for this boundary and overlying units in a sector of the piedmont zone and Subandino Boliviano foothills between 18°30’ and 20°S. It is based on detailed analysis of exploration wells data located in the Tajibo-Tacobo area and two measured sections in the Quebrada Taputá (Serranía de Charagua), the Iquiri Formation is exposed, as well as its relation to the units deposited above. Overlying the Iquiri Formation three unconformity-bounded sedimentary sequences with distinctive litho-stratigraphic characteristics were identified. The unconformity D1 is chronologically located in the uppermost Devonian. It separates the Iquiri Formation, of shallow shelf marine deposits, from Sequence 1 which is part of a new cycle of sedimentation in a marine depositional environment with glacial and fluvial influence. The unconformity D2, is the boundary between Sequence 1 and Sequence 2, although in some sectors this unconformity can completely erode Sequence 1, reaching the Iquiri Formation. This limit marks the boundary between the Devonian and Carboniferous The unconformity D3, is a highly erosive surface of early Carboniferous age above this discontinuity sandstones of widespread distribution in the Tarija basin were deposited. These major discontinuities are assigned to base level changes, probably caused by climatic factors.
