The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of nitrate ions (NO3-) on the critical pitting temperature (CPT) of Co1.5CrFeNi1.5Ti0.5Mo0.1 in chloride solutions using the potentiodynamic polarization method. Results indicate that the values of CPT for the alloy in 1 (mol/L) M sodium chloride (NaCl), 1 M NaCl with 0.1 M sodium nitrate (NaNO3), and 1 M NaCl with 1 M NaNO3 are 60, 70, and more than 80°C, respectively. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images show that nitrate ions enhance the initiation of pits, but impede the growth of preexisting pits on the surface of the alloy.
