The corrosion potential of pressure vessel steel after exposure to residual bubbles and the open-circuit potential of Pt during cavitation were measured to investigate the corrosion behavior induced by residual bubbles after cavitation bubble collapse (as distinct from erosion caused by cavitation impact). The surfaces of the corrosion specimens were also investigated using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was shown that the residual bubbles shift the potential of a Pt electrode to a more anodic potential and that the oxide layer induced by the residual bubbles is different from that produced by normal water without residual bubbles.
