More than 35 years ago, Asaro and Tiller proposed a mechanism for the initiation of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) based on the creation of surface undulations caused by an applied stress and the resulting surface diffusion of atoms. However, to this day no critical examination of this mechanism from a SCC standpoint has been undertaken to determine whether or not it is a viable mechanism for explaining SCC initiation. This paper presents the basic mechanism put forth by Asaro and Tiller and evaluates the suitability of the model and it's limitations using experimental data. | ||
