The company is currently performing field tests with its GenSysTM 5C combined heat and power fuel cell systems and fuel cell heating appliances, developed with Vaillant GmbH for the European multi-family home market. The main differences between the systems are controls and certifications. The GenSysTM 5C fuel cell system follows the electric demand of the facility and is certified by CSA to ANSI Z2183, the fuel cell heating appliance follows the heat demand of the facility and is CE certified by TUV. In the past two years, Plug Power has delivered more than 250 systems for field demonstrations. Three major programs, with several partners, will be discussed: one in Europe and two in the USA. As the European project has just begun, there is not much field data available. The US projects have demonstrated that the systems run with an availability of over 95% and an average electric efficiency of 25%. It was also shown that that reliability has improved with the introduction of new configurations.
