520 _aTranscripción del abstract original del autor: Environmental impacts between gas-pipeline projects and LNG projects are compared based on the LCA analysis from the stage of exploration, production, transportation, and to consumption. This analysis is very important because Japan, Taiwan and Korea are world-leading importers of natural gas, and all rely heavily on imported gas in the form of LNG instead of by pipeline. Recently China has decided to start an LNG project. Therefore it is more important to evaluate the environmental impacts of gas imports into Asian countries. In Europe and the Americas gas is mainly transported through pipelines. From the viewpoint of energy efficiency, it is necessary to evaluate if the process of liquefaction and re-gasification in LNG projects could be omitted, and how the energy load can be mitigated. In this report the amount of the carbon emission reduction and its magnitude are evaluated, based on the cost minimizing construction schedule and the transport plan of gas from exporting countries to consuming countries. The break-even point of gas by pipeline and LNG has been calculated from the view of equal emission impact, and it has been concluded that the distance is about 16,000 km in the base case. The distance from the Middle East to Japan is around 12,000 km. One can conclude that if only the environmental impact is considered with other impacts omitted, then installing pipeline projects in Asia will contribute to decreased environmental impacts to Asian countries and to reduce CO2 emission.
