The IOS is intended for day-to-day optimization of UGS operation, financial management and long term planning with on-line connection to dynamic data collected by a SCADA system (the control system located at the UGS site), numerical forecast of UGS performance (using a numerical 3D model) with respect to natural gas demand on the market specified by the dispatching center. One of the main tasks was to create a comprehensive tool for short term and long term analyses, for reducing operational and capital expenditures related to underground storages. Optimization of underground gas storage and automatic control of gas production / injection (with respect to rock and well properties, conditions of surface technologies and distribution pipelines) is important for the reduction of operational costs as well as an effective exploitation of reservoir energy, existing wells and surface technology. A convenient tool for continual optimal operation of underground gas storages is IOS interacting with a three-dimensional three-phase numerical model such as ECLIPSE (© Schlumberger) utilizing current data from the SCADA system. The IOS project was started by TRANSGAS in the 1990’s and recently is going to be implemented at one UGS in Lobodice as a pilot phase.
