To realize these targets in a proactive way management of health and safety constantly receives a great deal of attention within the organization. In order to facilitate the activities in this field, Gasunie has developed a specific Health and Safety Management System based on the Dutch Law. This is essentially a quality system geared to monitoring and improving the company’s attention to health and safety. Management systems used in many other countries (including the gas industry) are based on risk inventory and not on risk evaluation. The Gasunie system combines inventory and evaluation and makes it possible to compare several types of risks. Such a Risk Management System or Risk Assessment is a practical, systemic approach to identify hazards and evaluating the extend of risks taking into account existing precautions. The ranking of risks resulting from the risk evaluation forms the starting point for the risk control. It indicates the direction of generating solutions and measures to control the risks.
