520 _aTranscripción del abstract original del autor: The increasing sensitivity of the community to industrial safety and security, as a consequence of September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, lead us to answer the question, "what would happen in the case of a rupture of the concrete wall of a full containment LNG tank, whatever the cause?", even though such an event is not considered as a possible one from an industrial point of view. A first study carried out by EADS-APSYS for TFE, using classical 2D simulation tools, confirmed the interest of an ultimate impoundment system consisting of low diking, located at a fairly remote distance from the tank and delimiting a greater volume than the tank capacity. This study also showed that it exists a given hole diameter for which the evaporation rate is maximum. The disaster scenario was therefore modelled using highly sophisticated 3D simulation tools The study considered a 3 m diameter hole at the base of a full-containment 170,000 m3 LNG tank. This is a highly overestimated worst case scenario which is totally implausible from an industrial point of view. The 3D study, carried out by TRANSOFT, showed that the filling of the impoundment with the whole content of the tank results in hazard distances of several hundred metres (320 m for gas dispersion and 720 in the case of fire). It confirmed that 2D model leads to overestimated distances especially for stable weather condition (Pasquill F class) Additionnaly; the 3D study allowed us to validate the design of a remote impoundment system capable of avoiding overflow due to wave effect.
