The analysis of the momentum equation in the cross section of the flow, including the interfacial tension effect, allows an interesting analogy between the peripheral flow around the core and the flow surrounding an ascending bubble. Based upon this mechanism, it is suggested that the viscous and inertial forces in core annular can be combined in a single drag force, which is analogous to the drag in bubbles. By modeling the action of the lubricating forces in this way, an equation is obtained which describes the interface shape. Results for the height-to-width aspect ratio of the core are compared with laboratory measurements done by the author for a heavy oil-water core annular flow in a horizontal pipe. A criterion for stabilization is proposed. | ||
