As part of Conoco, Inc.’s goal of doubling its size by 2003, the Deepwater Business Unit has undertaken an aggressive exploration program in the Gulf of Mexico. In order to support this program, Conoco has addressed management of an exponentially growing volume of seismic data in a cost sensitive environment by integrating several technologies including Network Attached Storage (online), nearline storage managed by Hierarchical System Management Software and Seismic Project Management Applications. The focus of this system is to manage processed seismic data directly accessed by interpreters working in a UNIX based client server environment. Data storage costs have been reduced by approximately 50% while maintaining high performance data delivery to the desktop. Additional benefits have been gained in the areas of Knowledge Management, data security and project archiving. Future developments are likely to include management of SEG-Y data, integration of the seismic data loading function into the system and further integration with corporate databases.
