This paper discusses the configuration, features, performance and future of the Tank Farm SCADA system (TFS) implemented by Enbridge Pipelines Inc. and tesserNet Systems Inc. at eight terminal locations all across Canada. TFS is based on the Real Time Application Platform (RTAP), a generic SCADA package developed by the Product Development Center of Agilent Technologies (formerly Hewlett-Packard) in Calgary, Alberta. The system runs on Hewlett-Packard Unix workstations and is designed to communicate with a variety of field devices, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Remote Terminal Units (RTUs). In the near future TFS will see the implementation of remote control of the tank farms, the migration to Windows NT platforms and the integration with systems like Oracle and PI, designed to bring real time data on desktop screens, either in their original displays or in formats suited to processing by higher level company applications.
