The use of conventional pressure bottles encounters safety and cost difficulties. The paper describes a new pressure containment system the "Coselle" which is a large (400 t) coil of small diameter ERW line pipe which can be inspected by a pig. It is very suitable for ships. The technical and regulatory aspects of a coselle ship have been studied at length by three Class Societies with favourable results. ABS has set down the rules for class. In a CNG project, some 85% of the investment is in ships. The terminals are very much smaller than for LNG. Ships do not need to dock at wharves and can pick up gas from offshore platforms. The paper outlines the cost structure of a typical CNG project vs. competing technologies. A number of potential market areas around the world are discussed, together with the implications of continued technical improvements. | ||
