520 _aResumen del autor, extraído del trabajo. Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA) and his International partners are heavily involved in the design and construction of facilities to produce and process the extensive Orinoco Oil Belt extra heavy crude reserves and convert them into Synthetic crude oil of different qualities. The first part of this paper addresses the current process schemes used in four projects under execution with Delayed Coking process as the primary conversion unit to manufacture the synthetic crude oils. A correlation developed shows that all the different upgrading schemes fit linearly and accordingly with typical comparison curves that relates Delta API Gravity Improvements and complexity (measured as Equivalent Crude Distillation Capacity ECDC) with upgrader Investment in $/Bbl of crude processed or initial upgrading Investment in MM $. The second part describes the application of HDHPLUS Process Technology. This is a process developed by PDVSA Research and Technological Support Center INTEVEP during the past twenty years. HDHPLUS is a hydrogen addition and conversion process capable of economically upgrading Orinoco Oil Belt crude into very high quality Synthetic crude or finished products, which could comply with Tier II product specifications. Technical description of the most important features of the technology is covered with illustration of the extensive development program through which the process was able to reach the stage of commercial readiness.
