520 _aResumen del autor, extraido del trabajo. Due to the increasing gas demand in Saudi Arabia, a major deep drilling campaign resumed a few years ago to meet future needs. The activity level increased from one rig in 1994 to 14 rigs at present. This has involved drilling expensive wells in proven areas and exploring new fields in an effort to locate non-associated gas. Millions of dollars have been spent to drill wells. Therefore, economics is the driving force behind introducing state-of-the-art technology in order to optimize drilling cost while maintaining high standards of safety and well integrity. Task forces consisting of engineers, supervisors and specialists were established to study and introduce the latest technology in the market, consider slimming the casing design, and revise the mud program when possible. This paper will illustrate Saudi Aramco effort to reduce well cost through the optimization of bit design, casing design modification and other factors, which contributed to 25% reduction in well cost and time.
