520 _aUse of simulation in the control rooms of natural gas pipeline operators has changed over the last two decades. The early attempts in Europe met with mixed success. However, as simulation technology matured (and pipeline operators gained confidence in that technology) on-line system installation successes have been registered. The operational challenges that originally pointed European gas companies towards on-line simulation were simply not present in the U.S.A., where in excess of 50 pipeline companies control networks of 1,500km or more. However, market forces and new regulations have created new challenges for U.S. operating companies. In other countries where traditionally state-dominated monopolies have operated without competition, privatization is demanding operating efficiency. In the U.S.A., the business of contracting, ordering, delivering, and accounting for natural gas deliveries has changed dramatically over the past decade, fueled by the regulation that created "open-access" pipelines. Originally being gas merchants and transporters, the new regulations have stripped the pipeline companies of the merchant role. They're now exclusively transporters of gas, and the transportation market has become more dynamic, and intensely competitive. The more aggressive operating companies are rising to the challenge of changing their business practices. Simulation technologies are among the vehicles that will allow these companies to take maximum advantage of fleeting market opportunities, so increasing profitability. The Houston, Texas, based Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation (TETCO) division of Duke Energy is deploying an advanced automation system that combines many applications to assist in operational decision support. Central to that system is the Simulation Control Center (SCC). The whole project bears the title "FOCUS". Within the commercial context of daily gas pipeline operations, this paper describes the various simulation technologies deployed in the FOCUS project, how they will be used, and their association and interaction with the SCC. Through the example of FOCUS, the focus of pipeline simulation technology will be shown clearly to have changed.
