520 _aThe Cuyana basin is located in Mendoza and San Juan, between 31º 15` and 36º S. The basin is a continental rift form by different depocenters with opposite polarities that belong to different hemigrabens.Rincón Blanco hemigraben has a NW-SE disposition and is the northern closure of Cuyana Basin in Western Precordillera. It is situated between Los Patos River and the Tontal highland in the Barreal-Calingasta area, San Juan Province. It is made up of three isolated depocenters, Barreal and Agua de los Pajaritos corresponding to the passive margin and Rincón Blanco located in the active margin of the rift. In addition, the asymmetric characteristics of the rift would be linked to a simple shear mechanism with low angle takeoff levels. Likewise, the isostatic compensation by flexural level mechanism produced the rotated blocks that kept the hemigraben depocenters separated during most part of their evolution. The depocenter deposits show tectonic control in its evolution with thicknesses of around 3000 meters in the active margin and 950 meters in the passive margin. Moreover, the beginning of the extension caused a decrease of base level generating the necessary accommodation space for the development of the sub-basins.Barreal Group is composed of Barreal, Cortaderita and Cepeda formations. The first two represent the rift and post-rift stages and correspond to fluvial and shallow to deep lacustrine environments with deltaic features towards the end. In addition, the basal terms of the Cortaderita Formation characterize the first tectonic reactivation event. Cepeda Formation comprises fluvial and alluvial systems resulting from a second event of tectonic reactivation. The structural domain of the Barreal Group presents symmetric anticline-synclines series with NNO dip and wavelengths of a one kilometer. Inclinations vary between 41 ° and 55 ° degrees in the east and between 14 ° and 33 ° in the west area.In this paper we analyzed the tectonostratigraphic and source rock potential of intervals with abundant organic matter and impregnations within the Cortaderita Formation and the fluvial sandstones of interlaced character and the clast-support matrix of CepedaFormation with reservoir characteristics, elements that could suggest the existence of a potential petroleum system in the region.
