This conversion makes possible to obtain products that can be consumed directly as a fuel (for example, Diesel) or special products such as lubricants. The decade of the 1990s witnessed the return of the Fischer-Tropsch Process to the centre of attention in the world petroleum and natural gas industry. A radical transformation in selection environment of this technology has opened the door for its renovation. This paper analyses how the new selection environment is driving the renewal of the Gas-to- Resumen del autor: Liquids technology. The paper shows that this selection environment is driving the technology into some directions of innovations that are not in balance with the technology’s natural trajectory, as defined by Nelson et Winter (1982). As a consequence, firms have difficulties in defining a clear research programme, resulting in higher technological risks.
