The company's current oil sands growth initiative is Project Millennium - a $2.0 billion expansion project to provide the infrastructure that will increase annual plant capacity to 130,000 bbls/cd by the end of 2000 and to a further 220,000 bbls/cd in 2002. In addition to this, Suncor recently announced their intention to seek regulatory approval to add a commercial scale in-situ facility along with the construction of increased upgrader capacity. The addition of these facilities is another step towards a vision of reaching a daily production rate of 400,000 to 450,000 bbls/cd by 2008. All these production improvements could not have taken place without technological improvements made in conjunction with sound environmental management. This paper will describe the development and impact of technologies and outline some of the precautions being taken to minimize past, present and future environmental impacts of plant operations and expansion projects.
