Características de los paleocauces fluviales del grupo Chubut en el ámbito del cubo sísmico 3D de Laguna Janarez, Cuenca del Golfo San Jorge

The 3D seismic cube of Laguna Janarez was acquired in 2008 by YPF S.A, covering the oilfields Cerro Guadal Norte (CGuN) and El Guadal Sur (EGS), both situated in the Santa Cruz Province. The 3D cube presents a good seismic image quality, allowing the interpretation of several channel-form features by using horizon slices. In this way, it is possible to describe paleochannel bodies and define their characteristics such as length, width, direction and thickness, if the channel body was intercepted by a well. These characteristics are extremely important, both to stablish the potential sands stacking in a development or prospective area, and, to improve sand correlation in secondary recovery projects, where it is critical to know preferential direction of sand distribution to flood the reservoir. Moreover, these data can be critical to delimit variograms of stochastics models in new development areas.An inventory of channel-form features was conducted, which allowed to detect 182 and 77 paleochannel features in CGuN and EGS, respectively. The methodology does not have the same performance for all geological units. For example, channelized features within the Sección Tobácea unit show reduced thickness as observed in well logs, and this technique allowed to identify the most of paleochannels features, because of a better seismic contrast.As a conclusion, paleochannels of the Chubut Group for the area covered by this 3D seismic cube were essentially oriented NW-SE, showing an important structural control. Only subtle differences in architecture among the units of the Chubut Group were detected. The most frequently identified features are meander belts. Channel width in both oilfields (CGuN & EGS) are narrow ( =166m) for the Castillo Fm., while those within the Bajo Barreal Fm. (excluding features within the Sección Tobácea) are wider ( = 219m in CGuN and =288m in EGS). These temporal variations are very useful to stablish the spacing between wells.
