Influence of alloying elements Ga and Hg on electrochemical corrosion behavior of Mg solid solution

By: Publication details: mayo 2011Description: 6 p. ; 055003 In: Corrosion 67Summary: Transcripción del resumen del autor. The electrochemical corrosion behavior of Mg1.5Ga, Mg3Ga, and Mg1.5Hg1.5Ga (at%) alloys with an a-Mg single phase were investigated by potentiodynamic and galvanostatic testing. The corroded surface morphologies of Mg alloys were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and its corrosion products were determined using x-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and energy spectrum analysis (ESA). The results show that the solid solution of Ga and Hg in a-Mg promotes the electrochemical activity of Mg alloys, and the influence of Hg is greater than that of Ga. It is ascribed to the formation of Mg amalgams, namely, HgMg and Ga5Mg2, which react with water and promote the dissolution and discharge of a-Mg. The most negative stable potential of -1.80 V and open-circuit potential of -1.94 V occurs in the Mg1.5Hg1.5Ga alloy. The addition of 1.5 at% Ga to Mg1 .5Ga alloy increases the corrosion current density from 1.410 mA/cm2 to 1.794 mA/cm2, while the addition of 1.5 at% Hg increases the corrosion current density from 1.794 mA/cm2 to 5.282 mA/cm2.
