<subfield code="a">Transcripción del abstract original del autor: Recently there have been many problems related to automotive engineering, such as environmental issues and energy problems. These social circumstances motivate the adoption of urgent measures such as alternative fuel and new combustion techniques for the internal combustion engine. As promising alternative fuel, natural gas has been received much attention for its potential use as a vehicle. The inherent environmental benefits of natural gas over gasoline and diesel fuel are primary reason for this. For example there is less emission of oxides of carbon from natural gas combustion. In addition, there are very large deposits of this energy source spread around the world, much of which is not exploited. That is, its estimated amounts of deposits are abundant and this energy source spread worldwide so that this can cause stable supply over a long period of time. Therefore the clarification of the combustion properties of methane, which is the main component of natural gas, is important from the application point of view. On the other hand, with regard to new combustion techniques for internal-combustion engines, one of the most effective ways to improve the thermal efficiency and to reduce the pollutant emission is a lean-burn technique. Although this method has already been in practical use, there are many technical problems, such as the substantial decrease in the burning velocity and the large increase in the misfire probability in the lean mixture region. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the general properties of methane flames and to investigate the feasibility to utilize methane as fuel in lean burn engines.</subfield>
