High humidity engenders many problems, such as human discomfort, fungal and bacterial growth, sick building syndrome, building damage due to discolouration, staining of wall coverings and furnishings and malfunction of electronic equipment etc. Inadequate indoor air quality leads to mucous membrane and/or respiratory irritation, headache or fatigue. These humidity problems are prominent especially in the South China region such as Hong Kong. In year 2001, Hong Kong average relative humidity level is over 78% for three-quarter of the year. This paper will describe how The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited, being the gas utility company in Hong Kong serving more than 1.4 million residential customers, successfully comes up with an innovative multi-functional indoor air control unit which enhances quality of life. The device applies adsorption principle with silica gel as its desiccant. It is designed for ceiling mounted in bathroom or kitchen and is ideal for apartment buildings with no utility room. The power source is hot water supplied by a gas water heater with heating circulation function ER -
