It gives approximated analytical expressions to determine the time of the onset of melting, expansion rate of the melting zone and reverse freezing under thermal resistance of the borehole wall. The paper considers processes of thermal and thermal erosion impact on the permafrost during well drilling and methods of well protection from the effect of phase transitions in the permafrost during drilling and operation. In particular it gives the formula for selecting acceptable temperature of the drilling mud, which provides preservation of the permafrost. It also discusses the issues of hydrates control during operation of Arctic wells and the use of thermally insulated pipelines to prevent hydrating ER -
