Training covers the whole spectrum of specialties of the petroleum industry. The bulk of the enrollment come from the oil-producing provinces of the country: the Urals – Volga Region, West Siberia, the Komi Republic, etc, with the overwhelming majority of the graduates getting jobs with the oil companies, operating in these regions. University research is mainly tailored to the industry’s needs. Oil companies take an active part in the academic training: specialists from the industry are invited as guest lecturers, supervisors of course and diploma projects and consultants of post-graduates, the often become co-authors to educational and methodological text-books and also supervise field training for the students in the industry. Russian petroleum universities are characterized by a multilevel structure of undergraduate and postgraduate education: bachelors in technology and engineering (4 years of studies), diploma specialists (5-5.5 years of studies), masters ( 6 years of studies). Those seeking for candidates’ and doctors’ of science degrees to do research in the industry and carry out pedagogical work receive training at the post-graduate and doctorate courses. Universities also offer a considerable scope of upgrading for specialists from the industry, thus providing personnel for R&D in the industry. This report highlights the problems of the content of specialists training for the petroleum industry, a general analysis of personnel provision for the industry is given, and the problems of international legalization of university diplomas are discussed
