Natural gas is growing importance due to the increased share of gas in the total energy consumption and it is expected to cover a large share of the thermal use of energy. Such increase in the demand, strongly enhanced by the environmental advantage of gas over its competitors, and the technological progress are now changing the gas market from a regional to an international dimension. Looking at the future, strategic decisions for new supply of gas and storage infrastructures must be made years in advance because, while in the short term the security of supply is dependent on deliverability and available pipeline and storage capacity, in the long term it is function of marketable proven reserves and planned increments of storage capacity
