As the Chinese economy develops steadily and rapidly in recent years, the development of the automobile industry has been driven as well. It is predicted that the number of automobiles will exceed 1.6 million in year 2000. The development of the automobile industry also causes heavy pollution, which in turn damages the health of the people. The newly established automobile effluent control standard will be implemented in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou on July 1, 2000 and other places in China on January 1, 2003. In the new standard, the sulfur content in gasoline is reduced to 0.08% from 0.12% and olefin content no larger than 35%, which was not controlled in the previous standard.
