The possibility of isomerizing the C7 cut obtained from atmospheric distillation of crude oil as an alternative to its aromatization is elucidated in model compound studies. It is shown that, over selected bifunctional zeolite and zeolite-like catalysts, n-heptane can be isomerized up to medium conversions without significant hydrocracking as consecutive reaction. However, the achieved degree of branching of the isomerization product and, therefore, its research octane number (RON), is much too low. Therefore, process flow schemes are discussed in which the unbranched and the only slightly branched isomers are separated from the di- and tribranched isoheptanes and recycled to the isomerization reactor. In principle, this allows to obtain a product consisting almost exclusively of highly branched heptanes. From model calculations it can be deduced that such a mixture would possess research octane numbers above 86. It is, moreover, shown that the desired molecular sieve separation of n-heptane and the monomethyl hexanes from their multiply branched isomers can be achieved using medium pore zeolites, e.g., silicalite-1 as adsorbent.</subfield>
