Online resources: Summary: The Vaca Muerta Formation, the main source-rock in the Neuquén Basin, acquired international relevance in 2011, based on a report by the Argentina Energy Information Administration. This report quantified for the first time a large number of technically recoverable hydrocarbon reserves, highlighting its large areal extension, thickness, and high total organic matter. The first regional transect of the Vaca Muerta Formation published in 1982-1985 was largely based on seismic lines and well data and primarily interpreted from a sequence stratigraphy perspective. These previous studies allowed for first time understanding of the dominant sedimentary and depositional processes operating in the Neuquén Basin during Tithonian-Valanginian time, which includes the Vaca Muerta, Quintuco, and Mulichinco formations. Thereafter, additional studies and investigations were carried out and culminated in the preparation of a Vaca Muerta regional transect that was presented at the IX Exploration and Production Congress (CONEXPLO 2014). This theoretical framework that combined the understanding of the stratigraphic and sedimentary complexities with the definition of each stratigraphic unit in the Vaca Muerta Formation, lead to the construction of the regional geomechanical transect presented in this study, based on several 1D geomechanical models and seismic inversion data. This work allows us to provide fundamental information on the development stages of this shale play, from drilling and completion to production. In this study, a common workflow was followed by geomechanics experts from a group of operators and service companies, and independent consultants working in the basin, who shared information and knowledge in what is known as a "coopetition". The ultimate goal was to create a better understanding of the geomechanical variations of the Vaca Muerta Formation, both locally and regionally, in a predominantly NW-SE transect. The geomechanical parameters used in this analysis included: anisotropic elastic properties, rock strength, pore pressure, and principal stresses. The regional analysis shows that pore pressure strongly controls the magnitude of the principal stresses, indicating a normal stress regime (Sv>SH>Sh) towards the SW, in the shallowest structural zones in the basin (Aguada Baguales and Aguada del Cajón blocks), which differs from the rest of the transect where the stress regime is strike-slip (SH >Sv>Sh). The lowest values of the Young moduli are in the areas with the highest total organic content (basal section "La Cocina") which coincides with the highest elastic anisotropy, while the highest Young moduli are found towards the top of the sequence and coincide with carbonate layers. Similarly, a decrease in the magnitude of the Young moduli is observed from SE to NW, accompanied by an increase in anisotropy.
