POSIBLE RIESGO DE CORROSIÓN EN GASODUCTOS ENTERRADOS EN SUELOS RESISTIVOS POR VARIACIONES DEL POTENCIAL CAÑO-SUELO ANÓMALOS

One factor that can contribute to pipeline corrosion is electrical currents induced by geomagnetic disturbances. To protect them, a cathodic protection system is used that maintains the buried pipeline at a constant negative potential with respect to the surrounding soil, which inhibits corrosion reactions. However, these induced currents create anomalous variations in the pipe-soil potentials, so it is necessary to know where and how often they occur to assess and mitigate the risk. Large variations in pipe-soil potential have been observed in a section of the General San Martín gas pipeline of Transportadora de Gas del Sur S.A., in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. We present observations and analysis of the variations of the pipe-soil potential carried out in the period 2013-2018 when these fluctuations were recorded. The geomagnetic field recorded at the nearest Geomagnetic Observatory of Puerto Argentino (Port Stanley) was used to calculate the induced electric field at the Earth’s surface. The comparison between the variation of the pipe-soil potential and the variations of the electric field yielded correlation coefficients of up to 70%. From the analysis of the types of soils that contain the gas pipeline, it is possible exclude the influence of currents in the soil due to its low conductivity values. We conclude that factors in the structure of the pipe and in the conductivity profile of the soils could be the cause of these localized effects in the pipe.
