In 2018, CGC began an exploration campaign in the Tapi Aike block, located in the Southwest of the Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. 780 km2 of 3D seismic were acquired on the western sector including Cancha Carrera and Travesía de Arriba wells. In 2021, an exploration well reaching 3450 mbgl was drilled having as main target the Upper Cretaceous section which had been drilled and tested in neighboring wells. The study area is located in the foredeep sector of the Austral foreland basin where the Cretaceous and Paleocene column is particularly thickened compared to the better known and widely drilled eastern sector of the basin. The 3D seismic allowed a complete mapping of the Cancha Carrera southsoutheast plunging anticline structure, and the identification of Campanian to Lower Maastrichtian growth faults, N-S Andean-related structures and E-W Tertiary extensional fault system. During the drilling of the CC.x-1001 well, Upper Cretaceous and Paleocene sections had several events of influx and/or significant gas shows associated with clastic layers and/or natural fractures. Reservoirs are mainly tight sandstones in combined structural-stratigraphic traps, with closure against east-west faults towards the north and facies changes westward. The column is overpressured starting in Río Turbio Formation, with two increasing steps at the top of Cerro Cazador Formation and Tres Pasos Formation. Information obtained in recent exploration activity allowed not only to increase geological understanding for this sector of the basin, but also to extend the hydrocarbon potential in area and vertically.
