Seismic velocity anisotropy and its impact in the exploration and development decision making process Today, it is well recognized that seismic velocity anisotropy impacts the seismic events positioning in the tridimensional space after depth imaging. This effect is of considerable importance in placing new exploration and development wells. In this paper, I will briefly explain the reasons behind the effect of anisotropy on the seismic velocities. Afterwards, I will demonstrate with synthetic and field seismic data this effect and how it impacts the geometry of the geologic structures obtained after depth imaging. The consequences of ignoring seismic velocity anisotropy may imply that the positioning of new wells and the tie with existing wells are not optimum yielding unacceptable economic results.
