National oil companies (NOCs) now control access to most of the world's hydrocarbon resources. While they serve as a source of revenue for their governments-sometimes the only major source-and a focus of national prestige, they can suffer from poor management, corruption and inefficiency. Many NOCs have found that to thrive and compete, they have to adopt the ways of the private sector.
