The renegotiation of a contract between the Russian gas company Gazprom and Naftogaz Ukrayiny ought to have been a routine business affair. Instead, it became part of a wider political struggle between Rusia and the former Soviet republic of Ukraine, spreading way beyond the borders of the two countries involved as gas supplies were interrupted to other parts of Europe.
