Innovative technologies improve environmental protection -detection of gas leaks by helicopter-borne infrared laser system

In: Summary: Transcripción del abstract original del autor: In order to ensure safe and environmentally compatible operation of natural gas networks, transmission pipelines across the world are routinely checked by way of walking and mobile surveys or aerial inspections by small helicopters or planes. These kind of inspections involve huge costs. Innovative technologies provide the key to making operations more efficient. This is why Ruhrgas AG as the technology leader and a user of monitoring equipment teamed up with the German Aerospace Centre DLR as an application-oriented research institution and the Brandenburg-based systems developer Adlares to develop a novel, infrared light-based remote sensing system which – when used for routine aerial surveys by small helicopters – is capable of detecting even the smallest of gas leaks, particularly in built-up areas, at an early stage. Together with the use of modern satellite navigation systems, which provide accurate position data, and geographic information systems whose digital maps contain detailed information on pipeline routes, this offers new, highly flexible and efficient ways of looking after pipeline networks.
