Development of assessment tool on natural gas' contribution to global environment preservation, "fuel 21" for development of natural gas utilization technology and assessment of the impact

FUEL21 uses a scenario analysis-based energy model aimed at investigating CO2 emission control effect from technology development and its use. This tool determines future energy supply and demand and CO2 emissions by setting the level of energy use activities (production) in each of the industrial, commercial, residential and transportation sectors and energy use technologies (production technologies) as an energy demand-side scenario, and by balancing it with an energy supply-side scenario allowing for technology development. In this presentation, we will briefly describe the FUEL21 tool, and will report on the results of macro assessment of Japan's CO2 emission reduction measures, as well as of investigation of the market penetration of high-efficiency generation equipment, such as natural gas fuel cell and cogeneration systems, particularly in the commercial and residential sectors and its environmental contribution.
