Current state of development and spread of micro-cogeneration system in Japan

On the other hand, only a limited number of micro-cogeneration systems (MCGSs) were installed until recently because they often fail to yield economic gains and require the same level of maintenance and administration as those for large capacity power plants. The Electricity Enterprises Act was revised in 1995 to abolish the provision requiring high administration costs. With this revision as a turning point, we began development of CGS having an output capacity less than 10 kW. As a result, in October 1998 we successfully commercialized a 9.8 kW type consisting of a multiple switching unit. Due to its overall efficiency at more than 80%, the 9.8 kW type was accepted by customers with high reputation. With the aim to further expand MCGS installations, in October 2001 we commercialized system interconnection type 9.8 kW MCGS. We achieved a higher electric power usage ratio, lower initial cost including site work cost, and reduced engineering time. Following commercialization of 9.8 kW type, we placed 5 kW, 6 kW and 22 kW type on the market. Recently we sell 200 and more MCGSs in a year by our sales efforts, expansion of the unit variation and so on. In addition to the MCGS units described above, we have also been engaged in the development of effective heat utilization systems. A typical example is an exhaust heat recovery and hot water supply system that is best suited for MCGSs. Moreover we develop the remote supervisory control system and the gas engine driven heat pump provided with a power generating function.
