Carbon sequestration in forest ecosystems and gas industry: sustainable development and clean energy production from fossil fuel

The difference between concentrated and diffuse sources of carbon is pointed out, in order to show the need to diversify the carbon storage techniques. In the first part, biological sequestration is compared to underground storage, from various points of view. The second and main part is devoted to the biological sequestration itself, in particular in forest ecosystems. An evaluation of the carbon storage potential of this method is made, in comparison with carbon dioxide production in a gas energy plant. The potential fluxes of carbon storage are pointed out for four forest types, as compared to various power plant emissions. The third and last part of this article underlines the interest of a multi-goal approach for this type of carbon storage, in a sustainable development oriented view. On an operational scale in particular, common interests can be raised between gas industry and forest use as carbon sink, in terms of regional planning.
