Some engineering challenges to the design, construction and operation of export gas and oil pipelines from Russia to the Far east

In: Summary: Transcripción del abstract original del autor: There is a strong desire for the vast reserves of natural gas and oil in eastern Russia to be developed. One potential export vehicle would be a pipeline system from East Siberia, to an export terminal on the Pacific coast. From there, markets in Japan, North America and southeast Asia may be accessed. To achieve the design and construction of this export pipeline, an international consortium with international financing will likely need to be developed. The design and construction of a large diameter gas pipeline in this region presents significant technical problems, which must be addressed. A new export pipeline must meet international standards with respect to safety, integrity, and the environment. International studies have been completed in recent years that examined the technical viability of oil and gas export pipelines from eastern Russia. The studies have identified a number of technical challenges that should be addressed for a new export pipeline. Hence, the studies are useful in helping accelerate the proposed pipeline as it has pre-identified challenges to be met during the design stages. This paper reviews some of the engineering related issues an export pipeline will face, and describes some approaches to address those issues.
