On-site small methane steam reformer in a hydrogen refueling station for fuel cell buses in Madrid

CUTE intends not only to demonstrate the feasibility of FC buses technology but the hydrogen refuelling infrastructure as well. Owing to the regular hydrogen demand required by the buses operation, this is an excellent opportunity to test and demonstrate the suitability of local generation of 50 Nm3/h of hydrogen through a small natural gas fed steam reformer. The hydrogen fuelling station in Madrid has a complementary supply of road transported compressed hydrogen in cylinders that has a back-up function to ensure the hydrogen availability at the dispenser at any time. The steam reforming technology chosen for this project is not a downscale from designs for big plants but a new one specifically addressed to small capacity plants in compact form. The reformer furnace uses a flameless burner technology that provides a steady heat transfer even if fuel gas, mainly tail gas, has sudden Wobbe index variations.
