An alternative to flaring Southern Iran's "AMAK" Project

Reseumen del autor, extraído del trabajo. Abstract. Iran pioneered in the gathering and utilisation of flared associated gases in the Middle East. These gases were treated in NGL plants in which gas liquids were recovered. The last of these plants, the 'Karanj NGL 1500', was inaugurated in September 1999. Nevertheless some 30% of southern Iran's associated gases --- inclusive of both onshore and offshore gases --- are still being flared. Plans are on hand to reduce flaring to around 10% by the year 2004. There are a number of alternatives for gradually reducing flaring in southern Iran. Offshore gas exports to gas-poor neighbours seems feasible, whereas for onshore gases re-injection into oilfields has the edge over general gathering schemes. One of the major undertakings being presently considered is the "AMAK" project --- calling for the gathering and sweetening of some 6 million cubic meter per day of sour gases from five oil fields: Ab-Taymour, Mansouri, Marun, Ahwaz and Kupal. Capital investment for this project is estimated at around $ 255 million and due to its yield of 17,000 b/d of natural gas liquids, it seems to be an excellent proposition with an ROI of above 50% assuming 4Q-1999 crude oil prices.
