Resumen The Neuquén Basin structure is the result of multiple tectonic episodes, which goes from the initial extensional regime (rift stage) during the Early Jurassic, to the successive compressional episodes that affected the region up to the present day. In addition, the El Trapial structure has extra complexity because of the intrusion of two magmatic centers in the region (Cerro Bayo de la Sierra Negra and Cerro Bayo de Huantraico Laccoliths), which uplifted and compartmentalized the stratigraphic sequence. The Vaca Muerta Formation has a record of these tectonic episodes, which are represented in the area by natural fracture families and igneous intrusions. This work presents a natural fracture characterization for the Quintuco-Vaca Muerta sequence through integration of regional seismic and structure data in addition to acoustic, Wellbore image logs, core data and microseismic. Based on this analysis, families of open and closed natural fractures with a main orientation NNW, NNE, and ENE were recognized. The distribution of these fracture families varies laterally and vertically within the block, distinguishing two zones with different structural characteristics: a southern zone with a high density of natural fractures and high structural complexity, and a northern zone where the density of fractures is markedly lower. From an industry perspective, it is Well known that natural fractures play a key role during the Well completion, having an impact on the hydraulic fracture geometry and Well productivity. These fracture planes behave as high permeability pathways, which may increase the reservoir in place storage and enhance the stimulated rock volume (SRV: Stimulated rock volume). From this point of view, the natural fracture families recognized in the area have shown different behaviors against the completion treatment, being the ENE family the most likely to be reactivated. Based on these aspects, a proper natural fracture characterization is key to optimizing the hydraulic fracture design, Well spacing and orientation, as Well as to define areas with the highest productive potential.
