Resumen The objective of this work is to carry out a stratigraphic interpretation of the Vaca Muerta - Quintuco system (Tithonian - Valanginian) in the central sector of the Neuquén Basin, with special emphasis on the phosphorus (P) content and its paleoenvironmental significance. A complementary objective is to propose a correlation scheme with the shallow marine phosphate deposits outcropping towards the west in the fold and thrust belt. A geochemical characterization based on well logs and cutting was performed on a 867 m thick, subsurface sedimentary column located on the eastern flank of the Chihuidos High. Five distinct stratigraphic intervals were defined. The bottom three intervals correspond to the Vaca Muerta Fm. The lowermost Interval (168 m thick) is dominated by carbonate sedimentation, and shows the highest total organic carbon (TOC) content and the lowest P (<0.5 %) values, pointing to high productivity and anoxic bottom waters. Interval 2 (124 m thick) begins with a sharp drop in TOC values and an increase in the input of detrital material, while P reaches 0.5 %, indicating increased oxygenation and lower productivity. Interval 3 (86 m thick) records an increase in TOC and the highest P values (1 %) within the profile, attesting for an increase in productivity and a suboxic seafloor, associated with a relative sea-level rise. The upper two intervals (4 and 5) are assigned to the Quintuco Formation. Interval 4 (261 m thick) is characterized by an alternation of carbonate and clastic sedimentation, while Interval 5 (228 m thick) is dominated by clastic input. Both intervals record phosphorus values that reach up to 0.7 %, whereas TOC values are lower compared to those registered in the Vaca Muerta Formation. High P values recorded in the Interval 3 might have originated during high relative sea level and slow clastic sedimentation rates. In this context, the uplift of the Dorso de los Chihuidos in the Jurassic - Cretaceous boundary, might have played an important role in the generation of upwelling currents, locally increasing productivity in the water column. Understanding the relationships between productivity, accumulation and preservation of organic matter is a key factor in predicting the geographical and stratigraphic distribution of organic carbon-rich intervals within the Vaca Muerta-Quintuco system.
