Resumen A methodological identification and inventory of leads and prospects was developed in the offshore sedimentary basins of Uruguay. These basins extend over 125,000 km2 in the south Atlantic Ocean, comprising Punta del Este and Pelotas basins. Both share a common stratigraphy that includes a Paleozoic prerift phase; a Jurassic to Early Cretaceous synrift phase and a Cretaceous to Cenozoic postrift phase. Despite the large 2D and 3D seismic dataset, and other geological and geophysical information acquired during the last decade, these basins are still underexplored; with only three exploratory wells drilled. Twenty-one (21) prospects and leads were selected for volumetric assessment of oil and gas following a probabilistic method, yielding an average of 23,951.8 MMboe (millions of equivalent barrels of oil), as of December 2021. This assessment is not affected by technical risk, with gross unrisked volumes being reported. The assessment method comprised the analysis of the petroleum geology, including the different elements and processes of the speculative petroleum systems, definition of play concepts and identification and mapping of prospects from interpretation of geological and geophysical data. Numerous plays, not proven in these basins, have been identified in shallow to ultra-deep waters associated with stratigraphic, mixed and structural traps. These plays concepts include prerift anticlines, lacustrine fans of the synrift phase, isolated carbonate buildups of the transition phase, and more widely turbidites, channel systems, prograding deltaic sands and pinchouts of the postrift phase. The concepts, models and the portfolio of leads and prospects is continuously updated, after internal studies, as well as information and knowledge from operators, research and academic projects, and public domain data from neighboring and analog basins. Notwithstanding the uncertainties of the method and data inputs, taking into account the frontier nature of the Uruguayan basins, this work may help identify prospective areas for exploration and assess the resource potential of each lead and prospect
