Resumen Sand remobilization and injection is a common geological process in deep-water depositional systems in many basins worldwide. Recent outcrop observations and drilling, together with 3D seismic interpretations, indicate widespread remobilization and injection of sandy sediments in the Paleocene-Eocene of the Magallanes foreland Basin. The purpose of this contribution is twofold: (1) to characterize the remobilized and injected features and (2) to highlight its influence on the Tertiary petroleum system of the basin.In general, the Paleocene-Eocene stratigraphy of the Basin is dominated by marine fine-grained terrigenous punctuated by coarse-grained material, especially sandstones. In outcrops, 5 mm to ~1 m thick sandstone intrusions occur in mudstones and exhibit both simple and complex geometries with either upward or downward propagation. Contacts between injected sands and host strata are consistently sharp. Rafted clasts of the host lithology are locally embedded in the intrusions. In the subsurface, the study section lies at a depth of ~2300-6000 m and old and new drilling indicate that the section is locally overpressured. Seismically, the expression of interpreted deep-water channels in the foreland ramp domain is commonly chaotic but locally a wing-like amplitude anomaly is clearly seen. Some of these features were recently penetrated by several exploration wells. Well log correlations and recovered drill cores indicate they are gas-saturated channelized sandstones with evidence of remobilization and clastic injection, implying a new type of potential reservoirs for the basin. In well logs, where the reservoirs have been remobilized, the sands tend to occur in thick packages and the gamma-ray shape is commonly blocky. Farther west, in the foredeep component, gas shows and blowouts were recorded in similar deposits.The occurrence, both in outcrop and subsurface, of remobilized and injected sandstones in the Paleogene of the basin suggests that these events are widespread and more likely of regional scale. Because post-depositional deformation of a primary deposit can control reservoir architecture and maximum recovery, an understanding of the geometry and distribution of these hybrid-type reservoirs may provide important clues for future reservoir management, well planning and implementation of secondary recovery techniques (such as water injection). In addition, a better knowledge of these deposits may provide the base for more appropriate conceptual and numerical models for flow simulation at basin and reservoir scales. Although the Magallanes Basin is in a mature stage in the light of Cretaceous conventional resources, under the umbrella of the Tertiary potential, it continues to be attractive for further exploration.
